Insurance
Insurance companies may lower the main premium for the facility if that facility is taking extra precautions with fire protection to lower the overall risks. This could mean considerable savings over a period of time (contact your insurer for details).
Downtime
One factor a facility, office or factory cannot sustain is downtime due to fire. A small fire in the wrong area can cost a Power Station, Mine, Tunnel or Smelter up to $1.4 million per day in lost revenue. This figure excludes rectification works to get back on line. KBS Coating as well as the KBS Penetration Seal Systems can provide any solution required for the protection of electrical cables from fire.
Case Study
Cable Fire at a Large Mining Facility (Name withheld for privacy)
At 4:21pm a fire alarm was raised in the No. 1 Tertiary Crushing Building (TCB 1) substation and the alarm was raised at the facility security gate. The Emergency Services Officer and Shift Electrician investigated the alarm and found thick smoke coming from the 440V motor lead centre No. 6 (MLC6) which is located towards the southern end of the substation. The smoke was too thick for the electrician to determine where to isolate MLC6. The building was evacuated.
The fire brigade and relevant management were contacted. Significant damage was sustained to MLC6. However cabling directly above the MLC was coated with KBS Coating. This acted successfully to prevent the fire from spreading to cables in an overhead tray, which would have spread to other areas.
The same facility has now adopted a policy of passive fire protection over active fire protection (sprinklers, gas etc.). This is due to the excessive maintenance costs associated with active systems. Instead of paying over $248,400.00/year in maintenance costs, the client is only paying for the coating of cables or the rectification of their penetration seals. The new maintenance cost is estimated at $26,500.00. Quite the saving!
This case study highlights the following
- KBS Coating stopped the spread of flame at the cable gland,
- Lowered facility fire protection maintenance,
- Minimized downtime in replacement of machinery - without replacing cable. All due to the application of KBS Coating
KBS Passive Fire's focus is to protect your property and staff as well as save money on the supply and application of passive fire protection.
